Monitoring Costs and Offshoring with Heterogeneous Firms

چکیده

We present a model in which monitoring costs determine firms’ outsourcing and offshoring decisions. We predict that the most productive firms outsource in the South, while the least productive produce in-house in the North. Within the range of intermediate productivities, firms with lower productivity outsource in the North, and those with higher productivity perform in-house production in the South. Offshoring gives rise to higher average world productivity, but an overall loss of variety. Exit of Southern firms following offshoring is sufficient to offset any change in the number of Northern firms producing ex post. Inequality between Northern entrepreneurs and Northern workers rises, while that between Northern workers and Southern workers falls. Inequality between Northern entrepreneurs and everyone else rises. ∗Nuffield College and Department of Economics, University of Oxford. Email: [email protected]. What Drives Offshoring Decisions? Selection and Escape-Competition Mechanisms

I present a model of offshoring decisions with heterogeneous firms, random adjustment costs, and endogenous markups. The model proposes a tractable probabilistic framework that goes beyond the conventional view of self-selection of more productive firms into offshoring. By characterizing the offshoring decision as a lumpy investment decision subject to heterogeneous adjustment costs, the model ...

Trading Tasks: A Simple Theory of Offshoring

The nature of international trade is changing. For centuries, trade mostly entailed an exchange of goods. Now it increasingly involves bits of value being added in many different locations, or what might be called trade in tasks. Revolutionary advances in transportation and communications technology have weakened the link between labor specialization and geographic concentration, making it incr...

Immigration, Offshoring and American Jobs

How many "American jobs" have U.S.-born workers lost due to immigration and offshoring? Or, alternatively, is it possible that immigration and offshoring, by promoting cost-savings and enhanced efficiency in firms, have spurred the creation of jobs for U.S. natives? We consider a multi-sector version of the Grossman and Rossi-Hansberg (2008) model with a continuum of tasks in each sector and we...

Global Sourcing and Firm Selection

Which firms find it optimal to integrate their input suppliers into the firm boundaries of control (vertical integration)? Which firms choose to expand their sourcing activities across the national border (offshoring)? This letter provides novel evidence on these questions based on a Spanish firm-level data set. We find that firms selecting into strategies of vertical integration and of offshor...

The Determinants of Outward Processing: Evidence from Offshoring Intermediates by the European Union

This paper analyses the determinants of outward processing (OP) trade; specifically, imports of intermediates subsequent to processing abroad. A model where firms choose between OP and importing intermediates directly from a third country (generic offshoring, GO) predicts higher tariffs, lower monitoring costs and higher quality make OP more likely, while better institutions and rule of law abr...
